How an automotive locksmith can help
The ignition is a lock, and like any lock it wears. Over time, the key and the ignition cylinder wear together. Sometimes the key is the real problem and a new key solves it; other times the ignition cylinder itself needs service or replacement. We assess the situation and explain the options.
Is it the key or the ignition?
A worn or bent key is a common cause of ignition trouble, so a fresh key is often the first thing to try. If a new key behaves the same way, the cylinder is more likely at fault. If the vehicle uses a transponder key, a new key will also need programming. See car key replacement for details.
A quick thing to try
If the key will not turn, the steering wheel may be locked against it. Gently turn the wheel back and forth while turning the key. Do not force the key, because that can break it in the lock.
